W12 2D & 3D

Finished Product!
It all went together pretty well and any complication were fixed with little effort. Some of the materials that I found had to be adapted to work. E.G. the nuts and bolts that had to go through the plastic pages were to long so they had to be shortened. So they were hack-sawed and then filed the end to fix the thread.

Looking at the end product I have decided not put an image on the front cover. I think that it will look to out of place. The other reason is I don't want to take the risk at this stage to try it. Maybe at a later stage if I make another one I would Still like to try it. Out of my two designs the first one is the nicest. So this is the design that I would use again. If I find some spare time I may have ago at doing another one.

W11 2D & 3D

Zac:

1. Effectiveness of design process.

Has not got a clear concept. Will find it hard to complete in time if he runs into problems.

2. Effectiveness of concept communication.

A bit vague at the beginning but after asking some question the concept became a bit clearer.

3. Progress in the last week.

Very slow progress has changed his mind not aware of time has to complete

Carol:

1. Effectiveness of design process.

Well thought out designs can see that they work because she has working models. Needs some work on 2D design but will get there in the end.

2. Effectiveness of concept communication.

Concept still not clear but has produced works that are very interesting.

3. Progress in the last week.

Has completed another sculpture.

Steve:

1. Effectiveness of design process.

Has completed the groundwork e.g. Drawing up the grid still needs to complete a prototype to sort out and problems in construction.

2. Effectiveness of concept communication.

Could understand the concept and look forward to seeing the end product.

3. Progress in the last week.

Will need to pick up the work to get it completed on time. Sounds like a lot of work still to be done.

Sarah:

1.Effectiveness of design process.

Very well thought out design and layout. On her way to completing very high quality work.

2. Effectiveness of concept communication.

Needs to work on communication to back up her great work. But really liked how you showed the process of how you made the tag line.

3. Progress in the last week.

Getting there should see some results in the next week.

Amelia:

1. Effectiveness of design process.

Can see very clearly the process from start to finish. Has kept good documentation and research on the process as a whole. Can visualize the end product.

2. Effectiveness of concept communication.

Very well researched which shows clearly in the communication. Can answer any question that is thrown at her. Has thought of all the fine details and not over looked anything so the design should work fine.

3. Progress in the last week.

Has almost completed the patterns. Needs to refine it but almost complete.

REFLECTION

These are the bolts that i should have used. But i could not find any where that supplied them. In future may have to look at ordering them in. All up the design that i created worked well and i fitted together as i had hoped. Found that ply wood was the best material to use because of its ability to be sanded and smooth down, also for its weight and strength.

UP HERE POSTER POSSIBLE LAYOUTS.
These are my basic layouts for the poster. I class we came up with an idea to use our selves in the image. So we came up with holding the logo uphere on our diaries and then taking a photo and using this image as the main focus point on the poster to try and grab peoples attention. So the next few posters underneath are the refined one that i created in illustrator. Some of them are only vector shapes so these can be blown up to any size if we need to make any banners of sorts.

These are my poster designs. They keep with the colour theme that corporate communication had given us. They are a basic designs that gets the message across. Some of them i find interesting but Im pretty much over designing stuff for the exhibition need to start on something new something fresh.

W08 2D & 3D

For our exhibition we still had not come up with a logo. So we spent both lessons in 2d and 3d coming up with a new logo that was designed by the students that are running the exhibition. The class decided that the staff designed logo was not that flash and that we could come up with a more interesting design. We also thought that the logo was basic and had been done before. It also did not really represent the word uphere. The class spent an hour coming up with the font that was to be used for the logo. I wanted something that was a bit more exciting than normal fonts so I suggested we use BlockHouse. Its got a rawness to it that i think represents the northern territory art scene.

So this is the logo that i came up with in class was not feeling very enthusiastic about designing another logo as I had already come up with quite a few that got knocked back. I also thought that my balloon logo was very good. The reason that they did not pick it were not very convincing. The other thing was all the students who saw it loved it.

In saying all that I am really happy with the final Logo designed by Amelia. It has the creative edge that i was hoping for. It represents the name well and does not show the obvious concept of representing the NT.
The other thing that we had to keep in mind with designing was corporate coms for the uni gave us strict guide lines that all the imagery for the exhibition must abide to. These are the colour pallet that must be followed when producing and promotion.

This was the first logo that I designed. It was my initial idea when I herd the words uphere. I don't like the logo I came up with mainly because I did not like the name for the exhibition. I also did not like the fact that it comes across to territorian and does not look professional enough. I want some thing that is going to create more interest.
So after some thinking i came up with this idea. It has more emotion in it and also creates and captures the feel of the name. I like this logo much better its fun but also looks professional. I creates excitement and hopefully this will create more interest in the exhibition.

I got some feed back on the logo design. Things that I needed to change is the text it looks to party like childish in a way, Maybe take the highlights of the text. The image of the person is to much like a dancer, need a character that represents the faculties better, some thing that looks more like he is getting dragged away by the balloons starting on a new journey after uni.
3 key concepts
  1. Light feel to best represent the name.
  2. Creative.
  3. Clean and minimal.
  4. Create a story within the image.
3 key feelings
  1. Fun.
  2. Exciting.
  3. Interesting.

2 LOGO DESIGNS FOR STUDENT EXHIBITION

NON-FORPROFIT ARTS ORGANIZATION

My non-forprofit logo had to be simple to create but still wanted it to have great impact. Keeping it a simple block shape makes it look creative. Its simplified image makes it great for a logo because people can relate to it right away. Mono tone to keep costs down for printing.
Im really happy with the end product even though they are really simple they get the message across so well. I did try some different angles and got some cool effects. Like the Bottom left which is kind of like an illusion it tricks the mind into seeing things, is the box inside out or is the writing on the out side. Also give the effect that the BLOX is standing up and the 2010 building the future is like the shadow caused by them. But Im most happy with the angle that i used first in the top left corner, visually its the easiest to read and the most appealing cause i keep going back to look at it.

DESIGN INDUSTRY CLIENT
These designs are best suited for the design client i think because they have a more edgy feel to them. They have more of a design aspect about them, it has become more than just text. They are not easy to read at first so the view must pay closer attention to it to be able to read it thus the interaction will leave a more memorable effect on the viewer.

Illustrator images coming soon!!

I think that i like the non-forprofit one better just could not do in illustrator what i wanted to do . The end design came out to complicated and hard to read. The bottom one out of the two would be the best it is an interesting design if i had more time could come up with something better.

CHALLENGING ASSUMPTIONS
ASSUMPTION 1
I am assuming that the paper image will stick to the wood cover of the folio. The wood is pretty porous will it have enough surface area to hold. the paper. Does the wood have to be sanded first to make the surface area smooth for the paper to stick on. Does this then make the wood not have enough grip to hold on to the paper. Will just sticking the image on make the folder look tacky. Do i have to look at putting a finish over the lot to bring it up to the professional standard that i am looking for.

REFINEMENTS 1
I have done some research and a simple mix of wheat paste will stick paper to just about any thing. (street art paste ups: images are pasted on to anything in a public place, mettle poles, brick walls and wooden boards.) The only thing because we live in such a humid place in the past my wheat paste has become all mouldy and will make the folio look bad.

http://citynoise.org/upload/205.jpg
http://ambushu.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Nomade_Chariot_2_u_1000.jpg

So i will need to use a glue base adhesive to make sure that the paper will stick but also the paper will not become mouldy. Some thing like the glue they use to put up wall paper. When i have thought about it i am probably going to use a simple wood glue watered down. PVC will dry clear so i could also use it to seal the front of the image.

ASSUMPTION 2
That wood will be the best material for the back and front cover.
I assumed that this would be the best material because it is redly available fairly cheap and i have the tools at home to cut and manufacture the materials to get the end product. I would not have to do any running around and would not have to worry about relining on any one to build it. I could construct it my self.

REFINEMENTS 2
Will need to find a wood that can be smoothed down by sanding or wood that is already smooth like MDF.
Ply wood can be smoothed using a sander. I like ply because you can see the grain of the wood. It looks more natural than man made. The wood can come in very thin sheets which would reduce on weight.

Was also thinking about using recycled wood. Something that had been used before. It would have some character and a story behind it. Like a old wooden sign or boxes

Will also need to find hinges and a binder to keep my pages in the folder. I think that i will be able to pick them up from my local Bunnings store.

W05 2D

Quiz:

Q1. Relatives - A doctor in London had a brother in Manchester, who was a lawyer - but

the lawyer in Manchester did not have a brother in London who was a doctor. Why?

The doctor in London was his sister.

When we first look at the question our brains automatically tell us that the doctor is a male as the majority doctors in the world are males. It is then reenforced by the word brother which is male orientated. Thus throwing us off the tract and not thinking logically that the doctor could be a female.

Q2. Bottled Money - If you put a small coin piece in an empty bottle and replaced the

cork, how would you get the coin out of the bottle without taking out the cork or breaking

the bottle?

Push the cork all the way into the bottle then empty the coin out.

I could not figure out how to get the coin out. My mind was always focused on trying not to smash or break the bottle. I never thought about the cork at any stage. To focused on one point and not looking at the big picture.

Q3. The Restaurant Meal - Three women each have two daughters, and they all go into a

restaurant for a meal. There are only seven vacant seats in the restaurant, but each has

a seat for herself. How do they manage it?

1 Grandmother, Her 2 daughters who each had 2 daughters. 1+2+4=7

I came up with the answer straight away with this one. I knew that there were 7 seats and that all 7 seats would be filled. So if there were three ladies with two kids that would equal 9 which was to much so had to work it so that we lost two. The only way that this could be done is in layers, the grandmother at the top then her two daughters underneath then their two underneath them.

Challenging Assumptions EXERCISE 2

MIKE’S AUDITION

Have you ever been in Los Angeles freeway traffic? We were once in bumper‐to‐bumper traffic, trying

to get to the airport at 10:30 at night. I didn't know that there were traffic jams until late in the evening.

In any case, if you have had a similar experience, you can relate to the following problem, which will

show us how challenging assumptions leads to more creative solutions.

Mike had an audition for a movie role at eight the next morning. But it was in Hollywood, and he lived

on the other side of Los Angeles. He was notified of the audition late, and now it was one in the morning.

This was a problem, because it could take as much as four hours to get through the morning traffic, and

he needed time to shower and get ready. He would have to get up by a little after three that morning.

He thought about this. Just two hours of sleep, followed by hours on the freeway ‐ this might affect his

performance. This would be his first important role if he was hired, so his mind started scrambling for

solutions. Taking the bus might be faster than driving his van, but he didn't know the bus schedules, and

it was too late to find out. He looked at a map of the city, hoping for a better route, and he might have

found one, but it seemed dangerous to guess about routes he wasn't familiar with at this point.

He suddenly recalled a problem solving technique his friend Steve had told him about, and decided to

try it. He did the assumption‐challenging exercise, starting with a pen and piece of paper and writing a

list of assumptions.

1. What would be on your list of assumptions ‐ if you were Mike?

  • It would take 4 hours in traffic the next morning.
  • Needed time to get ready in the morning.
  • That he would need to start driving early the next morning.
  • Only get two hours sleep.
  • That he should sleep first.

2. Challenge each item in the list and find a solution to Mike’s problem

  • When would there be less traffic on the road. Early hours of the morning.
  • Get there early with plenty of time to freshen up.
  • Why not start driving now.
  • If he drove thought the night he could sleep in Hollywood and get more than 2 hours sleep.
  • Why not drive first then sleep after when he arrived.

ANSWER:
Start driving at one book into a hotel in Hollywood go to sleep, then go to the audition in the morning. This way he would not get stuck in traffic and waste 4 hours.

W04 2D Design. Cover Image for Folio

IMAGE DESIGN EXPLORATION & CHALLENGES
Design a cover image, for my design portfolio that I will be creating. I want the cover to reflect the type of work that I do and the quality of work inside. The image needs to be exciting and draw attention. It must make people want to look inside. It must not be intimidating.
Exploration:

  • Design on the front cover: professional, clean and sharp, appealing, unique
  • Different materials
  • Application: can be reproduced easily, use of a vinyl sticker or paint.

Challenges:

  • Getting a hold of materials/making sure different materials work well together
  • Which materials:
  • Designs, making different designs to appeal to different individuals
  • Representation.
Experiments:
  1. Experiment with colours: find out what colours draw the most attention. Find out the feelings that different colours have.
  2. Simple V Complex: Will the best design be one that is simple and to the point or wild and out there complexity. Which one will best represent what the folio will contain.
Pros & Cons:

COLOURS:
PROS
Colours can evoke emotion so finding the right colours to get the right emotion for the folio is critical. Need colours that evoke surprise, happiness, intrigue, desire, curiosity and excitement.
CONS
Not all colours will be suitable to use. Dull and boring colours will not cause any interest towards the folio. Images with all the one colour will not have as much impact because it will have not contrast.

SIMPLE Vs C*MPLEX
PROS + CONS
Simple design:
Pros
  1. Straight to the point shows exactly what it is and the function that it is used for.
  2. Easy to understand no explanation needed.
  3. Clean and look professional. (show that I understand design)
Cons
  1. Does not Leave much to the imagination.
  2. To easy to understand no interest created.
  3. May look like every other folio.
Complex design:
Pros
  1. Step outside the box.
  2. No rules fresh and creative.
  3. Something with allot of detail.
Cons
  1. People may not like out side the box thinking.
  2. Look messy and no thought process.
  3. Hard to understand and follow.

CHOOSING & REFUSING
Choosing: I want to create a colourful design with allot of detail. The colours are going to be bright and exciting. These colours will include Pink, Blue, and Purple. Representing fresh ideas and create interest to look inside the folio. The Design will be complex in a way but also simple. Will have allot of detail so that every time you look at the cover you will find something new to look at that you would have not seen before.

Refusing: Dark and dull colours like browns, dark green and greys. Simple design will not create enough interest to look inside the folio. A simple design will not show the creativeness or the quality of work inside.

Examples of Design Portfolio Covers.

Things that I should include:
JARROD LOCKLEY'S DESIGN PORTFOLIO
QUALIFICATIONS
CONTACT DETAILS (maybe these can go on the back).
