W04 2D Design. Cover Image for Folio

IMAGE DESIGN EXPLORATION & CHALLENGES
Design a cover image, for my design portfolio that I will be creating. I want the cover to reflect the type of work that I do and the quality of work inside. The image needs to be exciting and draw attention. It must make people want to look inside. It must not be intimidating.
Exploration:

  • Design on the front cover: professional, clean and sharp, appealing, unique
  • Different materials
  • Application: can be reproduced easily, use of a vinyl sticker or paint.

Challenges:

  • Getting a hold of materials/making sure different materials work well together
  • Which materials:
  • Designs, making different designs to appeal to different individuals
  • Representation.
Experiments:
  1. Experiment with colours: find out what colours draw the most attention. Find out the feelings that different colours have.
  2. Simple V Complex: Will the best design be one that is simple and to the point or wild and out there complexity. Which one will best represent what the folio will contain.
Pros & Cons:

COLOURS:
PROS
Colours can evoke emotion so finding the right colours to get the right emotion for the folio is critical. Need colours that evoke surprise, happiness, intrigue, desire, curiosity and excitement.
CONS
Not all colours will be suitable to use. Dull and boring colours will not cause any interest towards the folio. Images with all the one colour will not have as much impact because it will have not contrast.

SIMPLE Vs C*MPLEX
PROS + CONS
Simple design:
Pros
  1. Straight to the point shows exactly what it is and the function that it is used for.
  2. Easy to understand no explanation needed.
  3. Clean and look professional. (show that I understand design)
Cons
  1. Does not Leave much to the imagination.
  2. To easy to understand no interest created.
  3. May look like every other folio.
Complex design:
Pros
  1. Step outside the box.
  2. No rules fresh and creative.
  3. Something with allot of detail.
Cons
  1. People may not like out side the box thinking.
  2. Look messy and no thought process.
  3. Hard to understand and follow.

CHOOSING & REFUSING
Choosing: I want to create a colourful design with allot of detail. The colours are going to be bright and exciting. These colours will include Pink, Blue, and Purple. Representing fresh ideas and create interest to look inside the folio. The Design will be complex in a way but also simple. Will have allot of detail so that every time you look at the cover you will find something new to look at that you would have not seen before.

Refusing: Dark and dull colours like browns, dark green and greys. Simple design will not create enough interest to look inside the folio. A simple design will not show the creativeness or the quality of work inside.

  1. This is just the start of the blog items, so I'm presuming there is more to come.
    See you then!

  2. I'm on the fence about this, while more customization is good, I have a feeling this is a "in-progress" update, it just feels incomplete and half-way there.
We use badge layout for apps on design approvals (visual projects), so the image being displayed is important. Old layout "feels like" it had larger images,
maybe because the images were cropped more loosely so it's easier to tell which project it was at quick glance. Now the image is cropped closer, making it
harder to scan thru at quick glance. I find myself needing to click into the project more often than usual. Which makes the whole user experience less
    efficient.
I have a couple suggestions that might make it work better:
    1. Increase the height of the window the cover image is being displayed.
    2. Let us to choose which image to be displayed as "cover" (like how Pinterest handles cover images of each board, was hoping for this for a long time)
    3. Let us adjust which part of the image to show and how tight or loose the crop is (with a fixed window, let us move the image around and maybe enlarge or
shrink it to control what shows thru the window. Pinterest does a limited form of this, which is very useful in making the cover image relevant)
    4. Allow Cover Image to be ordered in different hierarchy (currently every element can be ordered differently except the Cover Image, it seems to be stuck
in the 2nd spot, would like the option to set it on another spot in the layout. This one seems like an easy fix, since you guys allow that for every other
    element already)
